20 minutes of walking a day, or two and a half hours of exercise a week, could reduce the risk of contracting seven cancers by a fifth, according to a team of scientists from the American Cancer Society.

What the study says

To reach this conclusion, researchers from the American Cancer Society followed 755,549 people for 10 years. Verdict in numbers: women who exercised at least two and a half hours of moderate physical activity per week, or at least 75 minutes of vigorous exercise were up to 18% less likely to develop uterine cancer than those who were inactive. The same goes for active men who were up to 14% less likely to develop colon cancer. 19% of athletes are also less likely to get blood cancer, according to the study.

Dr. Alpa Patel, co-author of the study by the American Cancer Society, observed: “What is exciting with these results is that they demonstrate that regular physical activity, even if it is moderate , can provide huge benefits and can protect against different types of cancer, when many believe that they need to radically change their lifestyle and start training for a marathon, to reduce this risk. “
